On the beautiful Scottish Isle of Barra Zhyphen were presented with a logistically challenging, Battery Energy storage and solar PV project within a DNO-restricted supply zone.
We successfully installed a 14.4kwp array of 400W Black Monocrystalline Solar PV panels, with a 45 kWh Zhyphen Instant-Grid Hybrid Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Three-Phase (45kWh Installed battery capacity; >36kWh usable @ 230Vac, )
The project focus was to minimise import from the grid supply through the installation of solar panels and integration with (Kingspan) 6kW wind turbines on the site. The aim was to have a whole site view of generation and consumption on the site with 4 EV charging points installed for local community use. The proposed outcome was to keep the grid connected as opposed to going off-grid.
The decision was to install Solar PV, storage and have 3 ‘Generation’ Systems on connection.
- Wind Turbine
- Zhyphen Instant-Grid Hybrid Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Three-Phase
- Solar PV
The goal was to be as self-sufficient as possible, using Solar PV and Wind to meet the majority of demand of EV Chargers and other site loads, using battery storage to facilitate this.

The System was installed and commissioned on October 24th, 2022, and the stakeholders were delighted that they are now finally enjoying lower energy bills, reduced carbon emissions and the comfort that they are now utilising more of the sustainable renewable energy that they produce and exporting less to the grid.
Zhyphen is delighted for this remote rural island community, especially as a previous contractor failed to deliver a project to achieve their above-detailed ambitions.
